St. Gennaro's treasure


San Gennaro, bishop and martyr of III century, is the patron saint of the city. The tradition and mystery melt in occasion of two annual miracles of the saint.

The golden statue of San Gennaro, authentic masterpiece of gothic jeweller's art, is taken in procession surrounded with myriad of flowers.

But the mystery, that for two times during the year makes unique this custom since '300, is the San Gennaro blood's miracle. San Gennaro's blood is kept into two ampullae , inside the cathedral and it melts in front of a lot of people, if the blood doesn't melt that predicts grave disasters.



The Chapel of San Gennaro's fortune.


At the beginning of '600, inside of cathedral of Naples, was built thanks to citizens economic help the chapel of San Gennaro' fortune to thank the saint after the end of the plague epidemic in 1527.


Citizens have the administration of the chapel and its fortune and for this reason they have founded for four centuries an Institution. It springs from some pontifical bulls, Borbonic and Murad writings and it is under the jurisdiction of Ministry of the Interior, while all the chapel is under the power of the Holy See, represented by the archbishop of Naples. The liturgical life is followed by the Prelate Corporation composed with twelve canons (of Neapolitan origins) among them the treasurer is chosen.
